Jubilation as supreme court takes final decision on PDP guber candidate

• The supreme court has upheld the primary election of Col. Kefas Agbu (rtd), the PDP governorship candidate in Taraba state
• Professor Jerome Nyameh and Hilkiah Buba-Joda have challenged the process that produced Agbu, as well as his eligibility
• But Justice Emmanuel Agim in his ruling said the appellants failed to make use of the internal mechanism of the PDP before approaching the court

Jalingo, Taraba – Col. Kefas Agbu (rtd) candidature as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Taraba state has been upheld by the supreme court.

The apex court on Friday, February 3, ended all the litigations that are challenging Agbu’s as the authentic governorship candidate of the PDP in the state, The Punch reported.

Why PDP governorship primary in Taraba is being challenged in court

Professor Jerome Nyameh, one of the PDP governorship aspirants in the state, filed against Kefas over the process that produced him as the party’s candidate for the 2023 election.

Nyameh’s case against Kefas was earlier dismissed by a federal high court in September 2022 over lack of merit.

The appeal court in Yola, the Adamawa state capital dismissed the suit, noting that it is an internal affair of the party.

Also dismissed is the appeal of the second contender of the PDP primary, Hilkiah Buba-Joda, who is also challenging the eligibility of Kefas Agbu.

Justice Emmanuel Agim in his judgment on Friday said that the challengers acted contrary to sections 84 and 87(9) of the electoral act over their failure to make use of the internal mechanism as stated in the guidelines of the party.

“Both appeals were deemed premature and lacking in merit as they were instituted without exploring the internal party options to seek redress before heading to the court,” the judge said.

Legit.ng earlier reported that the Lagos state commissioner for information, Gbenga Omotosho, has debunked the claim that the state government ordered traditional rulers in the state not to welcome opposition candidates.

Omotosho described the allegation as absurd and uncalled for because it denigrates the traditional institution.

According to the commissioner, PDP that made the allegation is the aggressor and is playing the victim game.
